Opinionated commentary on the world of sports.

Today is Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers

The baseball off-season seemed especially long this year.  Perhaps it was everything that was going on in the background that made the time pass so slowly.  Elections, wars, national disasters and an economic collapse.  Needless to say, the state of Michigan needs a distraction from all of the nonsense.  Sure, the Spartans are playing for a national championship tonight.  But that distraction will be short lived.  The Tigers will be playing all summer long.  There’s only one problem.  In order for the Tigers to be an effective stress reliever, they will have to win games.  Watching Fernando Rodney blow saves is not going to put Michiganders into a good mood.

In 1968 the Tigers won the World Series.  This wasn’t simply a typical championship season.  There had been race riots and chaos in the city of Detroit.  The success of the Tigers helped the city forget about its troubles and played a role in uniting citizens.  My hope is that the 2009 Tigers are going to be able to accomplish some of the same things.

I know that a good baseball season will hardly fix the problems that the city of Detroit, the State of Michigan and the entire nation are facing.  But if baseball can add a little joy to people’s lives, isn’t that good enough?

My season prediction, probably greatly skewed by the thoughts of what I just written about, is as follows:  The Tigers will win the AL Wild Card and make the playoffs.  From there, who knows?  Let’s go Tigers.  Michigan needs you.

  1. Not a good start to the Tigers season. Yes, a good summer of Tiger baseball will all make us feel better. Go Tigers. Hopefully Tuesday will be a better day. andyandvickie.wordpress.com

  2. Tonight’s game doesn’t really instill confidence though, does it?
